About Aljezur

Aljezur is a municipality in the southwestern Portuguese district of Faro. The population in 2011 was 11,773, in an area of 402.57 km². The municipality includes several towns and villages, including Odeceixe, where the Rota Vicentina begins. The present mayor is Luis Antunes and the president of the municipal assembly is Gilberto Gouveia. The municipality is known for its production of cork and honey, as well as its tourist attractions, which include beaches, hiking and bird watching.[3][4] The area of the municipality is hilly and includes the Serra de Monchique to the east. The highest point is Fóia, in the Monchique range, at 902 metres (2,959 ft). The coastline is rugged and has many cliffs. There are numerous small beaches, the largest being Odeceixe Beach. The nearest airport is Faro Airport.
