About Grândola

Set in the sun-drenched Alentejo region of Portugal, the town of Grândola is a charming mix of historical traditions and contemporary flair. The town’s name derives from the Latin for “great view”, and it’s easy to see why – set atop a hill, Grândola has panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Despite its relatively small size, Grândola has a rich history dating back to Roman times. The town was an important stopping point for traders travelling between Lisbon and Spain, and many of the buildings in the historic centre date from this period. In more recent history, Grândola was at the forefront of the 1974 Carnation Revolution, which saw the end of the dictatorship in Portugal. A statue in the town centre commemorates this event, and the nearby Museu da Revolução (Revolution Museum) tells the story of those momentous days. Nowadays, Grândola is a thriving community with a lively cultural scene. The town’s annual festival, the Festa dos Tabuleiros, celebrates the area’s traditional food – a type of flatbread topped with various toppings. And if you’re a fan of the hit TV series “Game of Thrones”, you may recognise Grândola as the setting for the fictional town of Meereen. Whether you’re looking for a place to relax in the sun, or a base to explore the stunning Alentejo region, Grândola is well worth a visit.
