About Montijo

The Montijo municipality is located in the Lisbon metropolitan area, on the left bank of the Tagus River estuary, in the district of Setúbal. The present municipality of Montijo was created on May 11, 1886, with the dissolution of the parish of São Miguel de Montijo, which until then had belonged to the municipality of Palmela. The town of Montijo has a total area of 38.58 km² and a population of 45,015 inhabitants (2011). The municipality is bordered to the north by the municipality of Almada, to the northeast by the municipality of Seixal, to the east and southeast by the municipality of Barreiro, to the southwest by the municipality of Alcochete and to the west by the municipality of Palmela. The municipality includes several small islands in the Tagus estuary, such as the island of Cagarras, the island of Farol and the island of Vale do Gaio. The economy of the municipality is mostly based on industry and services. However, there is also some agriculture, mainly in the form of horticulture. The municipality of Montijo is well served by road and rail links. The A2 motorway passes through the municipality, linking Lisbon to the south of the country. The Lisbon-Sintra railway line also passes through the municipality, with a station in the town of Montijo. Montijo is a municipality with a rich historical and cultural heritage. The town of Montijo has a number of interesting buildings, such as the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Conceição and the Palace of Montijo. The municipality of Montijo is an attractive destination for tourists, with its wide range of cultural and historical attractions.
