About Murça

Murça is a municipality in the north of Portugal, Vila Real district. The town proper has about 6000 inhabitants. The municipality includes several small villages and hamlets scattered in its 102 km² area. The terrain is hilly and the climate is continental with hot summers and cool winters. The economy is based on agriculture, livestock raising and forestry. The main crops are olives, grapes and corn. In the 19th century, Murça was an important center of the Portuguese wine industry. Today there are still many vineyards and wineries in the area producing red, white and rosé wines. The most famous is the Vinha da Ponte, a red wine made from the Tinta Roriz grape.
