About Penafiel

Penafiel is a town and municipality in the Portuguese Norte Region. It is 33 kilometres (21 miles) north-east of Porto. Penafiel was elevated to town status on 26 June 1858. The present Mayor is Luís Miguel Correia Afonso. The municipal holiday is 1 November. Administratively, the municipality is divided into 15 civil parishes (freguesias). The town of Penafiel sits in the green valleys of the Vale do Sousa, an area known for its production of Vinho Verde. The town itself is home to many cellars and wineries, as well as the Museum of Vinho Verde. The Douro River runs through the municipality. Just north of Penafiel is the regional centre of Espinho, known for its beaches and casino. To the south is Amarante, another historic town with many churches and monasteries.
