About Pinhel

The municipality of Pinhel is located in the district of Guarda, Portugal. The population in 2011 was 5,487, in an area of ​​ 282.6 km². The town of Pinhel has a medieval castle that dominates the whole town. The castle was built in the 13th century and served as a defensive outpost of the Kingdom of Portugal. The castle was captured by the Spanish in the 16th century and was only recaptured by the Portuguese in the 18th century. The castle is now a national monument and is open to the public.
