It is situated in the valley of the River Portaja, a tributary of the River Sabor. The municipality is home to the Castle of Vimioso, a medieval fortress built in the 12th century. The castle has been declared a National Monument of Portugal. The municipality is also home to the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda, a 17th-century chapel built in the baroque style.
